Web based man bag company, Blokesbags, is celebrating the end of its first highly successful year online.

Set up last October by former Bath Chronicle editor, David Gledhill and his partner Carole Bond, from their home in Batheaston, Blokesbags aimed to fill a gap in the market.

Until the launch of Blokesbags last October there were no stores on the web specialising exclusively in a range of men’s bags.

“It took a while to get going, but most things do on the web, and the last six months have been fantastic,’ said David.

Despite what the fashion pundits say that men will never carry a handbag, the best selling bag by far has been the traditional man’s handbag or wrist bag which has outsold the more fashionable messenger bags.

“If the pundits are right, why have I sold literally hundreds of these bags? Of course the more traditional bags such as the holdalls and briefcases have done well, but the man bag that has been scoffed at for so long is top of the pile.

“It is interesting to see how attitudes have changed in just the year we have been in business and many of our suppliers are having their best year ever and predicting even better for next year.

“There might be a recession, but it is not affecting the man bag business’, added David

A survey by insurance company More Than earlier this year found that eight out of ten men now carry a bag and that the value of the average contents of that bag adds up to £650.

“For our part we sell the majority of our bags to women for their men first time around, but then the men come back to get their second. Having said that, we are also seeing sales to women for women”.

Only a year ago, David was giving interviews in defence of the man bag to sceptical journalists and radio disc jockeys

“That doesn’t happen any more, now we are more likely to have a discussion about the bag they are carrying and whether it can be improved upon.”
