One of my favorite designers is Carolina Herrera. At a young age it’s said she liked to “play” with clothing. Born into a wealthy family Carolina was surrounded by things of beauty. Her sense of style was instilled at a very young age. She obviously continues to carry the sense of elegance that surrounded her in her youth into her life and her fashion design.

Her fashion designs are always timeless and classic. Carolina learned about fashion at an early age from her mother and other glorious women around her. She was surrounded by couture fashion growing up and attended her first fashion show at the age of 13.

From her mother Carolina learned that less is more, and this is what gives her fashion designs an aura of mystery and sensuality. Carolina Herrera’s fashion designs speak in a whisper and you know exactly what they’re saying.

Recently, a U.S. News annual survey revealed that The School of the Art Institute of Chicago has shifted up as the top U.S. school for fashion art programs. After several changes since its inception, The Art Institute has transferred to an iconic location along Michigan Avenue, which maintains its spot as the biggest and most famous museum-school in the United States. Cynthia Rowley, Halston and Gemma Kahng used to study in these institutions to further their craft.

In the Indian subcontinent, the National Institute of Fashion Technology is known to be the best fashion design school, which offers fashion technology curricula, from which a three-year course in fashion design for apparel can be acquired. The Pearl Academy of Fashion, with a center in UAE tucked under its belt, is also noted for its approach toward fashion studies.

Television functions much like the internet when it comes to fashion trends. Probably the most well known fashion training centers worldwide is London. Most notable is its Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, where its alumni include Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Hussein Chalayan and Stella McCartney. Some others in London are London College of Fashion, The University of Westminster and The Royal College of Arts. Its famous alumni are Christopher Bailey, Stuart Vevers and Vivienne Westwood.

In America, Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) and Parsons, The New School for Design both in New York City are highly commended. Similarly, Drexel University and Moore College in Philadelphia and The Lasell College in Newton, Massachusetts are popular fashion design schools. In the Los Angeles area, The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and A.I.U. in Los Angeles once had Uriel Saenz and Ashley Paige as students. A more specialized school, particularly in the posh French Haute Couture method, is the Academy of Couture Art in West Hollywood.

There are many fine fashion design schools to choose from. Some of the most revered fashion design schools are Wood-Tobe-Coburn School of Fashion Design in New York City and the International Academy of Design and Technology located in Montreal, Quebec.

Once you have obtained the required fashion design education the real work starts. This is obtaining the necessary experience, which will require perseverance and hard work.

Seemingly endless fame and fortune equate the biggest names in the fashion world. They are being looked up to and consulted for fashion tips by people whom even they look up to! Heard of prime ministers and country presidents without their own personal stylists? Hardly ever, for sure.

Fashion designers, particularly couturiers, have a way of seeing the best fitting outfits to almost anyone. They have the eye to determine what looks hot and what looks not. Experience teaches the better part of fashion designing, but admittedly “it’s innate; a gift,” a famed Hollywood designer once said.

While it takes more than gained knowledge, most of the world’s greatest fashion designers have attended some kind of school. Some designers are known to take fashion courses at fashion schools outside their countries which they believe can provide them the best training. Fashion hops globally, after all.

There are numerous dilemmas plaguing the modern fashion industry. Advertising in the fashion industry can be blamed for many of society’s problems with weight and eating disorders. There are many individuals in the world who do not have the ideal body type and the aggressive advertising campaigns waged by numerous fashion companies, portraying beautiful, skinny models and muscle clad men, create this illusion that this is the perfect body type and everyone should strive to look exactly like this. This puts a great deal of stress on people to try and look this way. These types of advertisements have an enormous impact on the youth at the present as many of them appear in youth magazines.

There is nothing easy about the life of a fashion designer. As with any “luxury” career, such as one in the world of sports or music, or haute cuisine, very few actually have what it takes to succeed and make a name for themselves.

For each successful fashion designer that makes it in the highly competitive world of fashion design such as Armani, Lauren or Herrera, there are literally hundreds of thousands that don’t make the grade. However, the good news is that there are many other avenues in the fashion design world open for those who have a talent to lend and a desire to work hard.

Most people who are serious about the area of fashion design show an aptitude and leaning towards fashion early in life. They have an eye for fashion. They have sewn a few garments and counseled their friends on fashion. Some may not be able to actually design fashion, but they can put together a look and have an ability to see the newest hottest fashions coming down the pike.
